FAQ
  • What is a Hackathon?
A hackathon is an event where individuals work as teams to solve real life problems. You can enhance your CVs and portfolios, expand your professional networks by interacting with mentors and judges from the industry who can guide you in technical / academia / professional aspects. Our sponsors, renowned corporations from the Hong Kong FinTech industry, may be present at the hackathon to observe your work and may even recruit you! Make sure you submit your CV when you apply and bring a few copies to the hackathon to maximize your chances for a future career. The winners will be selected by a panel of judges comprised of top industry professionals and awesome prizes are to be won!
  • When is the application deadline?
The application deadline is on 25 October 2019 at 11:59PM. No applications will be accepted after this deadline! Make sure you apply early!
  • Who can participate?
All students and alumni of tertiary institutions in Hong Kong can participate! If you have passion in building something innovative, interacting with like-minded professionals, and enjoying a fruitful weekend, welcome to apply!
  • What happens if I have never joined a hackathon?
We welcome participants from all backgrounds to apply. Don’t worry if you don’t have coding or hackathon experiences before. We have experienced professionals at the event to assist you and your team. Come and enjoy the experience!
  • I am not a programmer. Can I still join?
Applicants with computer science / software engineering background would be preferred. However, a team with a mixture of design, project management and programming would be ideal!
  • How much does it cost to join?
This hackathon is a free event!
  • Am I guaranteed to enter once I have applied?
Due to the high volume of applications that we receive, we will conduct screening on all applications. Qualified applicants will receive a confirmation email from us on the week of 28 Oct 2019.
  • How many people can be on a team?
Each team can have a minimum of 2 people and a maximum of 5 people.
  • What if I don't have a team?
In order to encourage teamwork, preferences of applications would be given to team applicants. However, we still welcome individual applications! Form a team with fellow individual applicants on the day of hackathon at your will and meet new friends!
  • Can my team and/or I use previous projects?
No, all projects need to start from scratch within the 24-hour time limit of the hackathon. If we notice any participants who use previously developed projects, the team will be disqualified from the hackathon (and will be stripped off all prizes if the related projects receive any from the hackathon). However, feel free to start brainstorming and discussing your ideas among your team prior to the hackathon! If you are unsure of something such as libraries or tools that you have created before, feel free to send us an email to bizkathon@ust.hk to ask or ask us on the day of the hackathon.
  • How are projects being judged?
Please refer to the participation agreement of the hackathon.
  • What should I bring to the hackathon?
Your innovative ideas, a working computer and any equipment that's going to help your development. Last but not least, your passion!
  • How do I get to the venue of the hackathon?
Please refer to venue and event agenda.
  • Who can I talk to if I have more questions?
You are welcome to email us at bizkathon@ust.hk if you have any further questions.
